Invisalign is popular because it straightens teeth without the use of unattractive brackets and wires. Instead, it uses custom-made plastic aligners that apply gentle pressure to the teeth in order to move them. Since the aligners place a barrier around your teeth, you might wonder if they will protect you from cavities. Sadly, the answer is no. This blog post explains what you should know about the possible formation of cavities during Invisalign treatment.

How Cavities Form During Invisalign Treatment

Cavities occur when oral bacteria interact with sugars and starches in the mouth. This process forms a sticky, acidic substance called plaque on the teeth. Plaque can harden into tartar, which may lead to damage to the tooth enamel. Over time, small holes known as cavities begin to develop.

Invisalign cannot protect your teeth from decay. Cavities can form during treatment in two ways:

  • Your aligners are not on your teeth while you eat and drink. Consuming anything other than water while wearing aligners may damage them, so it is important to remove them at mealtimes. When you take off your Invisalign trays to eat, your teeth get exposed to sugars and starches.
  • Oral hygiene missteps can lead to cavity formation. If you do not thoroughly clean your teeth before wearing your aligners, food particles and bacteria can become trapped inside them, leading to potential damage and cavities.

Keeping Your Teeth Healthy During Invisalign Treatment

Proper oral hygiene is essential if you wish to avoid cavities during Invisalign treatment. You should:

  • Rinse your aligners before using them.
  • Clean your aligners daily. You can brush them with a soft brush and periodically soak them in a cleansing solution.
  • Brush and floss after meals.
  • Eat a low-sugar diet that is rich in nutrients that support oral health, such as calcium and vitamin D.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings.

Despite your best efforts, there is still a small chance that you might develop a cavity while using Invisalign. If that happens, talk to your dentist about your options. You might need a small filling, which will be matched to the curvature of your tooth. It should not interfere with the way your aligners fit. Your dentist can also give you personalized tips to reduce your risk of additional cavities both during and after your orthodontic treatment.

You should not count on Invisalign to prevent cavities. Keep up with good oral hygiene habits so your smile can remain strong and healthy throughout your treatment.
