Dental Checkups & Teeth Cleanings for Kids
As a rule of thumb, we recommend that you start bringing your child to semi-annual dental checkups by their first birthday, or when their first tooth erupts. These regular visits are crucial in monitoring their oral development, which helps us identify and address potential problems early on. We’ll also provide professional teeth cleanings, and we’ll teach you and your child fun, effective ways to care for their growing smile in between visits.
Dental Sealants
Cavity-causing bacteria tend to gather in the deep pits and fissures of the molars in the back of the mouth. Kids often have difficulty brushing these teeth, especially since they’re still learning proper oral hygiene. To give these teeth some extra protection against decay, we can take just a few minutes to apply dental sealants. Made from a thin, clear resin, sealants literally seal out harmful food debris and bacteria, reducing the risk of cavities for up to 10 years.
Fluoride Treatments
After your child’s routine cleaning, we typically recommend a topical fluoride treatment. This process takes only minutes, but it goes a long way toward lowering the risk of tooth decay until their next appointment. Often added to public drinking water and toothpaste, fluoride strengthens the outer layer of the teeth, making it more resistant to cavities. We can apply an extra-strength fluoride gel to your child’s teeth that should deliver several months of enhanced protection.
Pulp Therapy
If your child is complaining of a toothache, it might be due to a large cavity that has reached the sensitive bundle of nerve tissue in the center of a tooth, known as the pulp. To relieve your child’s pain, we may recommend pulp therapy. Like with root canal therapy, the damaged tissue is removed and replaced after sterilizing the tooth. The main difference is that we take extra care to leave as much healthy tissue as possible untouched so as not to impact the tooth’s development.
Athletic Mouthguards
Does your little one play football, basketball, volleyball, or any other sport that comes with the risk of breaking or knocking out a tooth? If so, you’ll want to get them an athletic mouthguard to protect their smile. Although many sporting goods stores sell mouthguards for cheap, they’re not designed to fit your child’s unique teeth, so they won’t be very comfortable or effective. Our dental office, on the other hand, can create a custom-fit mouthguard that is more durable, personalized, and easier to wear than store-bought appliances.
